When should you replace your central air conditioning system?

In the world of central air conditioning systems, lifespan can be an issue. Even with a robust cleaning and maintenance regimen, the best systems will have to be repaired or replaced.

A central air conditioning system nearing the end of its lifespan will start to give several tell-tale signs, from rising electricity costs to increased dust in the home. A central system not running at peak performance can lead to higher costs, decreased comfort during hotter months, and poorer air quality for you and your family.

We’ve put together a guide of the five most important factors to determine if it’s time to replace your central air conditioning system. If you notice any of these in your home, contact Leffler Energy to help you determine if your system needs repairs, or a new system is needed.

1. Rising costs

  • Utility costs to heat and cool your home account for approximately 44 percent of your utility bills, but with an aging system, your overall utility bill could increase
  • A less efficient system means more energy is being used to maintain the same temperature and comfort level in your home. A new central air conditioning system could save you money in the long run.
  • 2. An aging system

    • Central air conditioning systems have a general lifespan of 10 to 15 years. Once your system is 10-years old, it’s best to make sure it’s maintained on a regular basis to avoid an unfortunate shut down.
    • Another issue with older systems is that they use a discontinued refrigerant called R22. R22 is now more expensive to replace because it not as widely available. New systems use modern refrigerants that are less environmentally harmful (generating less carbon emissions) and are more widely available.

    Inconsistent temperature and humidity control

    • If you find that some rooms are more humid than others, your central air system could need maintenance or replacement.
    • One of the hallmark features of central air conditioning systems is the removal of humidity throughout the house. Regardless of the temperature, the air should be dry and cool, lending to a more comfortable summer for you and your family.
    • If the temperature or humidity levels of your home are inconsistent, your system could need repairs, or be replaced altogether.

    Running too loud

    • Central air conditioning systems are known to be completely silent. But, if you start hearing buzzing or rattling noises inside the house, that means your system may not be running at a peak efficiency.
    • It’s possible that your indoor unit’s inner coil system is broken or malfunctioning. Or, your duct system is not large enough for the central air system. Whether you may require repairs or need to replace your system entirely, it’s best to bring in a professional technician to take a look.

    Dust in the air

    • The area in your ductwork should be clean and free of dust. Cracks in the ductwork could bring dust in through the inside of your home’s foundation, which will enter into the air through your central air conditioning system.
    • If you find that dust keeps accumulating throughout the house — especially after cleaning — that could be a sign that your central air conditioning system or ductwork needs repairs or replacement.

A new central air conditioning system can be an extremely valuable investment in your home. Potential repairs to an old system — not to mention the increased utility costs over time — can add up quickly when there are issues with your system.

That means replacing your central air conditioning system may be the best option for saving money. While there is a high up-front cost, you can recoup your losses over time in the money saved on repairs and increased utility bills.

Real estate agents also recognize that a peak-performing central air system can lower utility bills. A new central air system could make your home more attractive to potential buyers.
